The ICSW held a seminar on the welfare aspects of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 at the Baltic Exchange in London on Wednesday 28 November. The seminar heard from a range of expert speakers representing shipowners, unions, port, governments, and welfare organisations. The Convention will come into force in August 2013 with passenger ships and bulk carriers being expected to comply with the convention first. Some of the speakers made the point that many of the provisions in the MLC are not new and that welfare is not covered in the 14 areas when a ship is inspected. The seminar also heard that more needed to be done to make seafarers much more aware of the provisions of the MLC.

Presentations from the seminar are available for download below.
